Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. The ones that do are usually causing repeated infection, decay, or damage to the tooth in front — and those problems rarely resolve on their own.
When removal is advisable
Removal is usually recommended when a wisdom tooth is causing an identifiable problem:
- Repeated infection of the gum over a partly erupted tooth (pericoronitis)
- Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the molar in front of it
- Pressure or damage against the neighbouring tooth
- A cyst forming around an impacted tooth
- Persistent pain, swelling or a bad taste around the area
- Difficulty cleaning the area, leading to recurring gum problems
What the procedure involves
An X-ray is taken first to see the root shape and the position of the nerve. The area is fully numbed. A simple tooth may lift out in minutes; an impacted one may need a small incision and the tooth to be sectioned so it can be removed through a smaller opening. Sutures are placed where needed.
The complexity varies enormously between cases, which is why an assessment is worth more than a general estimate.
Recovery
Swelling typically peaks around day two and settles over the following days. Ice packs on the first day help. Stick to soft, cool food initially. Do not smoke or use a straw for several days — the suction can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket, which is genuinely painful and needs a further visit. Rinse gently with warm salt water from the day after, not before.

An impacted tooth lying against the nerve is a more involved procedure than one that has erupted normally. An X-ray tells us which yours is before we quote. These are indicative ranges, not a quotation — your exact cost is confirmed after an examination, before anything begins.
Common questions
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that has erupted fully, bites correctly and can be cleaned properly can usually be left alone. Removal is for teeth causing problems or very likely to cause them.
How long does recovery take?
Most people manage normal activity within two to three days, with swelling settling over roughly a week. Complex impactions take longer.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
Yes, under local anaesthesia — you will feel pressure but not pain. Sedation options can be discussed for anxious patients or complex cases.
What is a dry socket?
It occurs when the blood clot protecting the socket is lost, exposing bone. It causes severe pain a few days after extraction. Avoiding smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing greatly reduces the risk.
