Teeth cleaning and scaling in DLF Phase 2, Gurgaon

Brushing removes plaque. It does not remove tartar, which is plaque that has hardened onto the tooth and can no longer be brushed away. That is what a professional clean is for.

Why it is worth doing

Tartar sits along the gum line and below it, holding bacteria against the gum. Left there, it causes the inflammation that leads to bleeding gums, and eventually to bone loss around the teeth. Once it has hardened, no toothbrush or mouthwash will shift it.

A clean is also the appointment where problems get found early — a small cavity, an old filling starting to leak, an area of gum that needs watching. Treated at that stage they are minor. Left for two years they are not.

What happens during the appointment

An ultrasonic scaler is used to break up and flush away deposits, followed by hand instruments where finer work is needed around the gum line. The teeth are then polished to leave a smooth surface, which slows how quickly new plaque sticks.

Most people find it uncomfortable rather than painful. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, and we can use local anaesthetic if you would prefer.

How often

Every six months suits most people. More often if you smoke, have diabetes, wear braces, or have a history of gum disease. Less often is sometimes reasonable if your gums are healthy and stay that way — we will tell you honestly rather than booking you in by default.

Afterwards

Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal, particularly if there was a lot of tartar and the tooth surface underneath has been covered for a long time. It settles.

If your gums bled during the clean, that is a sign of existing inflammation rather than damage from the cleaning, and it usually improves within a couple of weeks of proper brushing.

Common questions

Does scaling loosen your teeth?

No. This is the most common myth about cleaning. Tartar does not hold teeth in place — it destroys the bone that does. If teeth feel slightly different afterwards, it is because the deposits wedged between them have gone.

Does teeth cleaning hurt?

Usually it is uncomfortable rather than painful. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, and local anaesthetic is available if you would prefer it.

Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?

It removes surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco, so teeth often look brighter. It does not change the natural colour of the tooth — that requires whitening.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Every six months suits most people. More often if you smoke, have diabetes, wear braces, or have a history of gum disease.
