An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a titanium post that fuses with the jawbone. A crown is fitted on top. Unlike a bridge, it does not require cutting down the healthy teeth on either side.
When an implant is the right choice
Implants suit most adults who have lost a tooth and have enough healthy bone to hold one. They are commonly used for:
- A single missing tooth, without touching the neighbouring teeth
- Several missing teeth, using implant-supported bridges
- Loose lower dentures that can be stabilised on implants
- Teeth lost to trauma, advanced decay or gum disease
- Replacing a failing tooth at the same visit it is removed, in selected cases
The stages, and how long they take
Assessment. Clinical examination plus an X-ray or scan to measure bone height and width, and to map the nerve position.
Placement. The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. Most people describe it as more comfortable than an extraction.
Healing. The bone grows onto the implant surface, a process called osseointegration. This typically takes a few months and cannot be rushed — it is what makes the implant stable for decades.
The crown. Once integrated, an abutment and a custom crown are fitted and matched to your other teeth.
If there is not enough bone
Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost, and long-standing gaps sometimes lack the volume to hold an implant. Bone grafting or a sinus lift can rebuild the site first. This adds a healing stage but makes an otherwise impossible case treatable. We tell you at the assessment if this applies to you.
Looking after an implant
Implants do not decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed — peri-implantitis — if plaque is left to build up. Brushing, cleaning between the teeth, not smoking, and regular reviews are what make implants last. Well-maintained implants routinely serve for decades.

Common questions
How long does the whole implant process take?
Usually a few months from placement to final crown, because the bone needs time to fuse to the implant. Cases needing a bone graft take longer. Your exact timeline is confirmed after an examination and X-ray.
Is implant surgery painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia and most patients report less discomfort than they expected — often less than a difficult extraction. Mild swelling for a couple of days is normal.
Am I too old for a dental implant?
There is no upper age limit. What matters is your general health, the condition of your gums and the amount of bone available, not your age.
Implant, bridge or denture — which is better?
An implant preserves the neighbouring teeth and the bone, but costs more and takes longer. A bridge is faster but requires trimming the adjacent teeth. We will explain the trade-offs for your specific case rather than pushing one option.
